Most are aware of this by now, but Elizebeth and I are going through a divorce. This is all very painful and scary, but we’ll make it through.

Since it is impossible for children to not be effected by divorce, I am making my best effort to transition them in the most healthy way possible. At the moment that means understanding what a child goes through during a divorce. I’m reading a couple of good books at the moment. One is called, What About the Kids?: Raising Your Children Before, During, and After Divorce and a 25 year study of the effects of divorce on children and how they differ from intact families.

Please keep praying and sending positive thoughts our way.

Sean.

This Memorial Day weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to take Ava and Audrey to the beach for their very first time! Yesterday, Sunday, it was beautiful and in the 70’s. Not to hot and just the right amount of wind to keep you cool. Ava and I had a Daddy/Ava afternoon at the Marina Park beach in Edmonds, WA. It couldn’t have been more perfect! Shortly before we left I believe Elizebeth asked Ava, “do you want to play Mario Kart or go to the beach?” The words, “Mario Kart,” were on the tip of her tongue when beach registered and she very excitedly said “THE BEACH!?!?!”

We arrived at the beach park and as we made our way over a grassy hill the ocean showed itself and then the beach. Never have I ever seen her so excited. She started to run yanking on my hand to hurry up. She didn’t have a swim suit or sandals yet so she just walked around at first in shoes and desperately wanted to go in the ocean. After exploring the sand and rocks and waves we played at the very cool big toy for a while where she went into true monkey mode and climbed like crazy and went down slides. But then it was back to the water and this time we took off her shoes and walked together in the ocean. I very earnestly warned her that the water would be cold, but she didn’t skip a beat. She went straight in and loved it. I however was having a flash back to when I was 7 years old, newly arrived to Washington coming from Maui. We went to Lake Chelan and I jumped in the lake assuming it was just like Maui. WRONG!

Ava and I raced around the water for just a short time before she fell on her bottom getting her shorts wet. Then eventually she pretty much got her whole body wet. That’s when the really fun began. She was born to swim, just like her dad. I can safely say that this was the best day in Ava’s life yet!Today I was all set up for Daddy/Audrey day at the same beach. The weather wasn’t beautiful like yesterday. In fact, it was lightly raining. But I wanted Audrey to experience the beach too so she can get a feel for it. We didn’t go in the water, not for lack of Audrey trying, but we played in the wet sand and walked around exploring the rocks and curves of the beach. Audrey had a great time and really loved the sandy terrain. The big toy was too wet to play on, so we walked over the bridge they had and looked at boats. She too had a great time and didn’t want to leave. While Audrey and I were at the beach, Ava and Elizebeth went to the mall to get a swim suit. This next weekend we should be going swimming in the ProClub pools! This has definitely been one of the best weekends ever. Love those girls!

Papa Sean.

You may have read Elizebeth’s recent post on Audrey’s initial assessment of autism, so you know something is going on. Today we received our official comprehensive diagnosis that Audrey is indeed on the autism spectrum. While she has much strength that other children on the spectrum don’t have, she has a long and difficult path ahead of her. We’ve already started plugging her into programs that will support her needs and hopefully help her overcome the challenges she will face. We have her enrolled in occupational therapy (OT) and speech therapy weekly. Yesterday we met with our school districts “birth – 3” program and she will be enrolled in that soon. We were accepted into the UW Autism Research program (who did the comprehensive diagnosis) and they will be working with Audrey a great deal. Additionally, we may have her working with a dietician, physical therapist and a number of other areas of support. She will get the help she needs.

If you’ve ever listened to me talk about healthcare you know that I am a strong supporter of getting everyone in the world the help they need to overcome health issues. Since I work at Microsoft I receive quite possibly the absolute best healthcare insurance coverage in the United States. I don’t pay a penny for any doctor visits, therapy sessions, ER visits, ambulance rides, etc. No co pays. No nothing. If we have a concern we go to the appropriate doctor or professional. No hesitation. No letting money even consume an iota of thought on whether we should go. This is what everyone should have, not just me and my family. So it is with a mix of happiness and sadness that the massive amount of care Audrey receives is completely free. For most other it costs a lot of money. Most insurance won’t even pay out to treat Autism. Just a diagnosis can cost over $1500 after being on a 9 month wait list.

Healthcare won’t change overnight. Neither will awareness of Autism. But we can all start contributing by simply taking some time to learn more. Elizebeth and I are now advocates for Autism awareness, meaning as we learn more we will share and help others be empowered with knowledge and support.

If you are interested in learning more about Autism, autismspeaks.org is a good place to start.

Audrey is a beautiful energetic sweet heart and one of the loves of my life. Our love and resolve to ensure that she leads a happy and healthy life will not run out.
